Coppe is strongly involved in the training of human resources, research and development towards the exploration and exploitation of oil and gas. Since the establishment of the first collaboration agreement between Petrobras and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in 1977, COPPE has worked in several areas within the oil and gas industry, especially in offshore activities.


In recent decades, the discovery of huge deepwater oil and gas reserves has intensified collaboration between Coppe and Petrobras in new engineering specialties. The result of these research and development activities has been transferred to society through three main channels: 1) The training of human resources; 2) The production and publication of scientific papers (including the organization of international conferences, such as the OMAE -Offshore Mechanics and Arctic Engineering conference in 2001 and 2012; and 3) conducting consulting, research and development projects. In 2018 we will celebrate 15 years of the installation of the largest ocean tank in the world, designed and built by Coppe.


In this context, the master's and doctorate courses related to the Oil and Gas interdisciplinary area  contribute with this important segment of the industry, , which has presented an increasing development, especially in the last years with the beginning of the oil production on the pre-salt layers, offshore Brazil.
These courses also offer a broad and up-to-date scientific perspective of the bases and forms of technological development required for the rational exploration and production of oil and gas. They cover different lines of research (listed in the table below), integrating professors and researchers from different department and laboratories at Coppe, and are also associated with the Human Resources Program of the National Petroleum Agency (PRH/ANP).
