When founded in 1994, Coppe's Business Incubator was one of the first in the country. It encourages entrepreneurship and the transfer of knowledge generated in academic research to create new services and technological products. Its work is focused mainly in the areas of oil and gas, energy, environment and information technology.
It currently has 29 resident companies and 61 graduate. The nascent companies, including resident and graduate, reached a R$ 289 million (roughly US$ 91 million) revenue in 2014 and created more than 1,200 highly qualified jobs, of which 287 were occupied by masters and doctors.
The Incubator opens selection notices annually. The selection criteria are the following: degree of innovation of the product or service, potential of interaction with the UFRJ; and technical and economic viability. The selected companies can be incubated for a period of up to three years, during which they will have available physical and technology infrastructure, as well as a package of services for the development of the company in the business area. This period may be extended by two more cycles of one year each.
Coppe’s Incubator is part of an innovative ecosystem booming in the University City, the Science Park of the UFRJ. This ecosystem comprises research and development centers of mature companies with a long history of innovation and the presence of innovative companies with high technological content that make this environment more robust.
